Biblical Counseling: Truth in a World of Theory

There has never been a better time to be a biblical counselor than right now. In the mental health world, many of the world’s theories are being questioned not just by biblical counselors, but also by experts and academic leaders. As the world is scrambling for answers, unable to find them in their own theories, we believe that we have truth in a world of theories.

The reason we can confidently say that we have truth is because we believe that the Bible is inspired, inerrant, and sufficient.

  1. The Bible is the Inspired Word of God
2 Timothy 3:16 declares that the Word of God is God-breathed. According to Hebrews 4:12, it is also living and active. Because the Bible is God-breathed, living, and active, when a counselee is struggling and their mind is driving them crazy, we can point them to Scripture. The Word of God speaks directly into their world and their struggles, having the ultimate authority over the internal voices telling them lies.
  2. The Bible is the Inerrant Word of God
In the original manuscripts, God gave the Bible’s authors his words to write, and since they are his words, there cannot be any mistakes. Therefore, Scripture becomes the authoritative voice on any given subject it speaks on. When it comes to biblical counseling in particular, the Bible is a treasure trove of rich wisdom, helping us understand man and his struggles. There are countless passages about the heart, soul, mind, spirit, and conscience. It also sheds light on the loves, hopes, and affections of the inner person, which can be greatly used to help a counselee.
  3. The Word of God is Sufficient
Because the Bible is sufficient, it becomes a comprehensive resource that gives us wisdom on how to work with humans. We have the ability to build out a complete approach to helping humans working through their various struggles right from the pages of Scripture.
