The Importance of Communication
Communication is such an important skill to have when it comes to our interpersonal relationships. We may love Jesus and His Word, and yet still be bad communicators, and if we are poor communicators, it is going to hurt our relationships. Throughout the Bible, the power that our words have is clearly shown. In some instances, our words are compared to a sword that has the power to take lives. In other cases, our words are shown to be ministers of life and edification to those around us. Our words can bring death or life, and it is up to us to learn how to communicate most effectively with them. We must be committed to investing in relationships with our words in a way that honors Christ as LORD.
What is Communication?
Communication is more than just the words you say, but also how you say them. It is not even just what is said, but what is not said as well. The time that you choose to say something and the motivation behind what you say are also key components of communication. Communication is a skill that, as believers, we must all work to grow in. For example, those who are quieter can work on speaking up more, while those who are more extroverted can work on listening better in a conversation. If we can get better at communicating, all areas of our lives will feel a positive impact, such as our relationships with the church body, friends, family, and coworkers.
As you go through this series, Dr. Gifford encourages you to think about one communication skill that you need to grow in the most. Think about the areas of communication where you may have had two or three people point out the opportunity for growth in that skill. Throughout the series, Dr. Gifford will give different pieces of rules and wisdom about communication that can be applied to any area of communication struggle that you may want to grow in.
