The Pursuit: Jesus and the Wells – Episode 2

In today’s episode, the encounter at the well takes place in Genesis 29. Here, God’s provision is put on display as Jacob, the son of Isaac, meets Rachel for the first time.

Jacob’s Current Situation

At the onset of Genesis 29, Jacob is not in a good place. He is running for his life. Esau is vengeful against his brother, who tricked him out of his birthright and blessing. He wants him dead, forcing Jacob to flee his home. It is in this vulnerable state that Jacob stumbles upon the well, a well surrounded by shepherds and their flocks. Jacob quickly engages them in conversation, asking them where they are from and whether they know Laban, his mother’s brother. Forced to leave his own home, he is searching for connection to his family.

The Shepherds at the Well

The shepherds mention that not only do they know Laban, but that his daughter Rachel is coming to the well herself. At this moment, Jacob’s entire attitude changes, causing him to spring into action. He urges the shepherds to move along from the well, leaving him to have a private moment with Rachel. However, the shepherds are not ready to leave the well. They must wait for all of the flocks to gather before moving the large stone at the mouth of the well to provide them with their water.

God’s Provision Over it All

In an uncharacteristic burst of strength, Jacob decides that he will roll the stone away from the mouth of the well, giving water to the sheep of Laban’s tribe. Previously described in Genesis 25:27 as “a peaceful man, living in tents” (Genesis 25:27b, LSB). He had no mastery, strength, or experience, making this act no small feat. After moving the stone, he sees Rachel draw near and he greets her with a kiss and breaks down weeping. Jacob, who just left his home in disgrace, suddenly finds himself face to face with God’s provision in his life. God is always with Jacob even in spite of Jacob and his shortcomings. Despite his sin, weakness, and wandering, the Lord still provides for Jacob exactly what he needs.
