The Pursuit: Exploring the Book of Hebrews – Why Jesus is Better

In our journey through biblical studies, we often seek a deeper understanding of the texts that shape our faith. One such text is the book of Hebrews, a unique composition within the New Testament that blends the form of a sermon with that of a letter. This approach allows it to communicate profound theological truths in an engaging manner. As we examine the book of Hebrews, we encounter recurring themes that offer insights into the supremacy of Jesus Christ above revered figures of the Old Testament and established traditions.

The Dual Nature of Hebrews

Hebrews begins like a sermon: “God, having spoken long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days spoke to use in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He mad the worlds…” (Hebrews 1:1-2, LSB) This introductory statement sets a tone of exhortation and teaching. Toward the end of the book, reminiscent of epistles, we find a closing benediction and personal notes that are typical of a letter.

The authorship of Hebrews remains anonymous, sparking much debate. While traditionally attributed to the Apostle Paul, some scholars and believers argue against this due to the differences in style and theological emphasis.

A ‘Better’ Revelation

A central theme within Hebrews is the concept of Jesus being “better.” This is not a dismissal of the prophets, angels, or Old Testament figures such as Moses and Joshua, but an acknowledgment of Jesus’ preeminence. He is not only the culmination of prophecy but the divine Son through whom God has spoken in these last days. Hebrews contrasts the ministry of prophets who delivered God’s messages through visions, dreams, and direct speech, with the ultimate revelation through Jesus, the Son. The prophets carried God’s messages, but Jesus fulfilled them. The Son’s superiority is further illustrated by His divine characteristics: He is the radiance of the Father’s glory and the exact representation of His being.

The Role of Jesus: Prophet, Priest, and King

Hebrews provides profound insights into the offices held by Jesus. In the Old Testament, the roles of prophet, priest, and king were distinct, each representing various aspects of God’s covenantal relationship with His people. Jesus uniquely fulfills all three.

Prophet: In His earthly ministry, Jesus proclaimed God’s truth, fulfilling the prophetic role. –

Priest: Hebrews distinctly emphasizes Jesus as a priest, offering Himself as an ultimate, sufficient sacrifice for humanity’s sins—a recurring theme throughout the book.

King: Now ascended, Jesus reigns from the Father’s right hand, a position of honor, signaling completion of His redemptive work.

Understanding ‘Better’

When Hebrews declares Jesus as “better,” it honors the efficacy and importance of the law and the prophets while revealing them to be fulfilled and exceeded in Christ. This message can be counter-cultural, especially for Jewish Christians in the first century who revered their heritage. The writer of Hebrews doesn’t negate the value of the Old Testament figures and traditions but shows how Jesus surpasses them, offering something greater.

Looking Ahead

This study session opened our exploration of Hebrews by affirming Jesus as better than the prophets. In the next session, we will learn why Jesus is greater than the angels, a concept that might initially seem peculiar to modern readers. These insights deepen our appreciation for an inspired teacher who sought to reveal the fullness of God’s gift in His Son. Stay tuned for our next discussion as we unveil more of the magnificence of Jesus Christ through the text of Hebrews.
